Gerber Survival Knife Review: LMF ll Survival knife

There is nothing more valuable to a prepper or survivalist than a good survival knife. In this article we are going to take a look at a Gerber survival knife that has caught our eye.

The Gerber LMF ll Survival knife.

What DO We Love About This Gerber Survival Knife?

The first thing that we really noticed about this knife is the overall quality. As a matter of fact this knife was designed to free crew from a downed aircraft….That’s right, this knife is was designed to cut through the fuselage of an aircraft to free trapped crew members.

Pretty impressive… Gerber survival knives are known for their quality and ingenuity. The LMF-II is no different.

Made in the USA and built to last, the first impression of this knife is the fact that it is straight forward and simply designed. When one looks closer however there are many hidden features that make this knife stand out from many other options out there.

How Does This Knife Carry?

The knife is 10″ long…Which in our opinion is the perfect size. It allows you to still carry without having a massive blade in your waistband that is bulky and impractical.

One thing that many people forget when prepping and building up their survival supplies is comfort and ease of use.

This is one thing that stands out on the Gerber, it brings usefulness and practicality to the table. The last thing you want in a survival situation is a knife that is simply a pain to carry around. The sheath that the Gerber LMF II comes with is fantastic. (see below.)

Wrapped around your leg and secured… Not much more to ask for here.

Actually there is one more great feature… A built in sharpener.

How Does This Knife Function?

The build of this knife leaves nothing to be desired, it’s a tough knife. There is just something about a Gerber survival knife. Made in the USA and designed by military personnel, the function needs to stand up to the demands of the real world situations of surviving.

The overall length of this LMF-ll is 10.59″….. 4.84″ Of this is high carbon blade. The serrated blade allows you to cut through everything from wood to seatbelts. It is rugged enough to handle pretty much whatever you can throw at it.

With a multitude of 5 star reviews on Amazon this knife seems to be a no brainer.

The blade is sharp and holds a nice edge well. Another thing I really like is the stainless steel butt cap, it allows you to break glass or strike any object needed if the situation arises.

The sheath holds the knife very well and blends nicely into your pant leg as well.

Key Features Of The LMF-II

The End Buttcap: The end cap is designed with thoughtful and ingenious purpose.

Made of stainless steel and designed to break glass. Plus provide a means to hammer against any object. The buttcap features a smart design that is physically separated from the tang in order to offer shock absorption when it’s used as a hammer and also to prevent electrical shock.

The Handle: The handle is designed to fit nicely in the hand and more importantly prevent blisters and fatigue. The grip is secure and the black color blends into your carry well. Lashing holes allow for extending the knife into a spear, making it all the more useable.

Sheath With Built In Sharpener: The sheath is fantastic. Able to attach to MOLLIE belt or vest with a low profile hold. The real perk of the sheath however is the built in sharpener. The stainless steel blade can take a lot of abuse, knowing that you can sharpen the blade in any situation however is a major upside to this knife.

How About The Drawbacks?

Although there are not too many bad things to say about this knife. The fact it has mostly 5 Star reviews on Amazon says a lot. However there are a few things I wanted to touch on quickly.

It’s Not A Full Tang Knife

The biggest drawback of this knife is the fact that it is not a “full tang” knife. There have been reviews stating that the endcap and handle can loosen up under heavy use ( such as hitting the blade to split wood etc.)

It is important to remember that this is a part of the overall design of this knife however. The separation between the endcap and tang is to prevent electrocution when cutting someone out of a downed aircraft.

I agree that most everyday people will ever be in that sort of situation. It is important to remember however that this was designed by military personnel.

In their world this risk is very real. Overall I don’t think under normal use this knife will have any issues with staying in good shape.

Shipping Damage

The other strange thing that is stated in reviews is the knife coming in looking used or scratched. I’m sure that this does happen at times. Amazon does a great job of making these things right in my experience. Although this could be aggravating I don’t worry too much about it.

Price

This Gerber survival knife it is a little pricey. Coming in at around $190 bucks this knife is an investment.

There are other options that are much less money. I would rather have a cheaper knife than no knife to start out with. The quality is not as good as this Gerber, but the price point gets you something to start your collection of survival gear.

If you have the money and are looking for a knife that will last a lifetime the Gerber LMF-II is a great choice for the survivalist, prepper, or collector.

Wrapping Up The Gerber LMF-II Survival Knife Review.

In my opinion Gerber has really built a great knife here. Sturdy, rugged, and built to last this knife has the features and quality to provide a lifetime of service.

Anyone from a serious prepper to the novice camper can gain value from this thoughtfully designed and well built workhorse. At a higher price point this blade is indeed a bit of an initial investment, however can you afford not to have it if a situation calls for a quality knife that can handle real survival?

  1. Thanks for your review on This Gerber Survival Knife. I have to say that the knife looks great if you just carry it for your protection or even useful when you go out camping or hunting as well. I do not think that you can skin the animal with this but It can come in handy for sure. This will be a perfect gift for my husband!

    • A very handy knife for sure, your husband will love it. This knife will last a lifetime and be a great asset!

  2. Hi, this is certainly a serious knife. I particularly like the holes so you can easily attach it to the end of a spear. Though I have neither training nor experience of survival techniques, I could well imagine that a spear would be useful against predators or for spearing large fish. And I have heard it said that in the wild one of the most universal and important pieces of survival gear is a great knife.

    • You are correct in saying that a good knife is the best piece of equipment you could ever have in a survival situation. There is simply nothing more useful. With a great knife you can stay alive!
